The Problem of Obesity
Obesity is a chronic disease affecting approximately 1 in 5 Americans.
Obesity is considered the second leading cause of preventable death and disease in our country.
Obesity is strongly related to metabolic conditions such as type II diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, osteoarthritis, respiratory problems, depression, and many other conditions.
Causes of obesity can be genetic, physiologic, behavioral/habit and cultural.
Approximately 10-15 million Americans are morbidly obese, and 31 million have Type II Diabetes Mellitus.
Weight loss is not achieved by surgery alone. You must develop healthy eating habits and commit to lifelong behavior changes in order to achieve lasting successful weight reduction.
Goals after gastric bypass surgery include:
Prevention of nutritional deficiencies from reduced intake and absorption.
Prevent and or eliminate intolerance to foods.
Promote safe and successful weight loss.
Instruction on eating and lifestyle behaviors to achieve and maintain a desirable body weight.
It is important that post bariatric surgical patients have a strong support system, one in which provides them with both psychological and nutritional guidance.
